Following your treatment with EVLT and UGS, Recovery Periods can vary so it’s best to know what to expect before beginning treatment. Endovenous Laser Treatment and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) are two of the most modern and effective varicose vein treatments available. Recovery from EVLT and UGS is relatively fast and simple, however there are several things you need to know.
Immediately following your procedure:
Resuming normal activities. Most normal activities can be resumed within 24 hours following treatment, if not sooner. However, you may experience discomfort and/or bruising along the treated vein. This typically resolves in 1-2 weeks.
Resuming routine exercise. The typical recommendation is to wait 7-10 days before resuming activities such as running, weight lifting, cycling, swimming, etc. For the same period, you should avoid lifting heavy weights, e.g. more than 10kg. Walking is encouraged during this period.
Avoiding infection. The treated area should not be soaked in water (pool, hot tub, or bath) for 7-10 days. Showers are generally approved, although you should limit exposure of the treated area.
Tightness and pulling sensations. You may experience feelings of tightness or a pulling sensation along the length of the treated vein. This is normal and typically resolves over time.
Tenderness and inflammation. Also normal, also likely to resolve naturally over time. Extreme pain should be reported to your doctor.
One month following your procedure:
Continued healing. Significant improvement in post-procedure symptoms should be evident. You may still have tenderness, tightness, discolouration, or residual knots of tissue along the path of the treated vein. These symptoms will continue to diminish over time.
Follow up visit. You may be scheduled for a follow up visit. This is common and helps evaluate treatment results, healing, and overall vein health. Determination of the need for additional treatments may be made at this point.
